Papers, 1835-1956.

This accession contains the personal papers of Eugene du Pont, Jr., and the records of the Kinloch Gun Club, a private shooting club which he founded. It also contains a separate collection of correspondence between Alfred I. du Pont, vice president and general manager of the Du Pont Company, with his assistant Frank L. Connable, which is an important source for the history of the company in the early 1900s.

Hamilton Barksdale (1861-1918) was born in Richmond, Va. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1882 with a degree in civil engineering. Eugene du Pont, Jr., was born on July 7, 1873, the second son of Eugene du Pont and Amelia Elizabeth du Pont. He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. Alfred I. du Pont was the eldest son of E. I. du Pont (1829-1877). He joined the family gunpowder firm in 1884, after attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the 1902 reorganization, he became co-owner and general manager. As a result of a family quarrel, he left the firm in 1916 and eventually built his own banking and real estate empire in Florida.
